CICF ChaptersCalgaryEdmontonHalifaxHamiltonThe Chapters - Working For YouCICF Chapters At WorkContributions from across CanadaThe board of directors of the Canadian Intensive Care Foundation (CICF) wishes to thank all volunteers in community chapters throughout Canada for their ongoing financial support. Intensive care research fundraising expands opportunities for investigators (young and old) and helps the CICF provide resources for chapters across the country. Four CICF chapters are established in Canadian centers (Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax and Hamilton) while others are in transitional or development stages. CICF volunteers in these centers raise funds through events and activities, including golf tournaments and bingo among others. The foundation has released more than $1 million in total grants since 2001 - contributions from corporate, foundation, and volunteer sources. CICF leaders are especially proud of the achievement given the struggle each year to distribute a grant total over $100,000 throughout the country when provincially-sourced funds (gaming regulations) are restricted to those specific geographic regions. The CICF will also provide over $26,000 during the 2007 year in support of critical care educational activities for all critical care disciplines such as nursing and respiratory therapy.
More Funds for Community ChaptersCICF chapter members will now keep more of the funds they raise from local activities to support future fundraising opportunities close to home. CICF leaders recently accepted the committee recommendation to increase the fundraising share for chapters at a regular meeting of the board of directors. Dr. Paul Boiteau of Calgary, proposed funds raised through event activities by community chapters should increase from 10 per cent to 50 per cent of the net proceeds in support of critical care research and education. A separate committee report following the decision indicated that - not-withstanding the challenges currently facing chapters - these community-based groups generate about 75 per cent of current foundation income. Further, that number may be higher as donations for the most part also came from the operating chapter sources during the past fiscal year. The prospect of chapter members having more say in how local funds raised are distributed, based on increased funding allocations, may energize community participation by more local health care workers and public members.
